Water Issue in Selangor-Langat 2 Project

Water Issue in Selangor-Langat 2 Project

Press Release by:
Ketua Penerangan Barisan Nasional Negeri Selangor
Dato’ Yap Pian Hon

The Barisan Nasional Selangor wishes to express our serious concerns to recent news reports which disclosed the Selangor state government has yet to facilitate the development order for the construction of Langat 2 water treatmentplant to be sited in the state.

We therefore strongly urge the State government led by Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim to expedite efforts and cooperation to the implementation of the project.

We also support efforts by Syarikat Belakan Air Selangor (Syabas) and the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) in submitting a memorandum to the Federal Government on ways to prevent a potential water crisis in the state.

In order to lessen the risks of insufficient water supply and to prove claims of a people-centric state government, Selangor’s Mentri Besar should not play politics on the water issue.

The state government should not hold to ransom the Federal Government on the state water restructuring issue with the needs of the peoples in Selangor on water supply.

Even the Energy, Green technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin FahKui has openly indicated the urgency for the project to be immediately implemented including the construction of water treatment plants so that some estimated 13% to 14% deficit in water consumption in Selangor, Wilayah Persekutan and Putrajaya could be met by year 2014.

We also wish to ask the Selangor state government a question: whether by delaying the construction of the water treatment plant, will it help to avoid the potential water shortage consumption in the state?
